Lessons learned the hard way...

I'm thinking you may be wondering why we are stripping the paint off of the front porch of the house? Isn't that the part most protected from weather and sun exposure? Yup it sure is, but not from an overzealous homeowner with a powerwasher in hand. You see a few years ago a friend had rented this great powerwasher for a project at her house. After helping her somewhat with that project, I thought it would be a "great idea" to borrow the powerwasher to try and wash rust stains off the concrete on the porch floor (how did they get there anyway???). So off we trudge with the powerwasher to my house and I wash the porch floor (no, it did not remove the rust stains...Dumb idea #1). While I'm washing the floor I look up and say to myself "Boy this porch sure is dirty, maybe I'll just hit it with this powerwasher"= Dumb idea #2. Unfortunately afterwards I read in the Tom Silva "bible" aka This Old House.com that you should never power/pressure wash an old house. Per Silva: "A power-washer may sound like a time saver but its streaming jets can damage old wood." You see the "power" in "power wash" is too much for the old clapboard. Doesn't seem like I damaged the wood but I definitely damaged the paint. Luckily, I was only dumb enough to use the powerwasher on the porch. So just in case you were wondering...
